Uppinangady : If the gigantic tanker  that transports the much needed LPG from one place is another,   is a  boon in many ways, tragically it has  proved as a messenger of death to the family of Sunder Rai of Perne.

The family which had lost two of its members in an accident involving a gas tanker in 1998, exactly 14 years later, lost  one more member in a gas tanker mishap itself, leaving  it in a state of utter grief.

It was August 15, 1998. The wedding of Sunder Rai’s brother and sister was held at a marriage hall at Uppinangady.  But as fate would have it, the ambassador car carrying the newlywed couple was hit by a gas tanker at Bollar in 34 Nekkilady village, killing Sunder Rai’s mother and sister(bride).  It took several years for the family to overcome the grief and now the recent tragedy has left the family in complete shock and sorrow.

The LPG tanker mishap at Perne near Uppinangady on April 8., Tuesday,  has claimed the life of Shobha Rai, wife of Sunder Rai’s brother Shanker Rai. Shanker works as a conductor in a bus in Mangalore.   Shobha was washing clothes and was caught in the flames that erupted when the tanker exploded. Shanker Rai was helpless, but managed to survive by running away. The children who had been to the Anganavadi too were safe. Sunder Rai’s  wife Indira who was inside the house  is injured.

The second tragedy has left the family shattered forever.
