ACT rescues injured pregnant bovine from Baikampady

Mangaluru: A pregnant buffalo, who was left in a critical state after being injured in a vehicular accident at Baikampady was successfully rescued by Animal Care Trust, with the help of some Good Samaritans. However, the bovine continues to be critical state.

On March 18, an injured bovine was found on the roadside at the busy Baikampady area. Locals called upon ACT to take the animal away from the spot. However, the organization had to face difficulties as most veterinary doctors were on leave owing to Ugadi. Finally, Dr Suresh from the government veterinary department in Surathkal came and administered the necessary injections to ease the injured buffalo.

Upon further inspection, it was ascertained that the buffalo was pregnant. Animal lover and ACT volunteer Nischal Shetty, along with some people arranged for a crane to carry the injured buffalo.

As the buffalo had suffered a lot of trauma and was understandably in immense pain, the volunteers used nets instead of belts to carry her so as to avoid further discomfort.

The animal is currently being looked after at the ACT’s office in Shakthinagar near here and her condition is dire.

“She is on fluids as she is unable to eat food normally for the time being and is unable to get up. Preliminary physical examinations have revealed that the buffalo has suffered broken bones but the extent of the injuries are still unclear. The status of the pregnancy is also unknown as the animal’s trauma prevents further tests,” ACT trustee Suma Nayak told NewsKarnataka.

The bovine is on pain killers and other medications but, it will take 4 to 5 days for her trauma to reduce so that tests could be conducted, Nayak said.

She also mentioned that there are plenty of other bulls, cows and buffaloes that have been abandoned and are left on the roads in the NMPT (New Mangalore Port Trust), Panambur and Baikampady areas.

These animals have nowhere to go and get injured frequently. Many have broken horns and are bleeding from other injuries. “Who is responsible? The government should do something to help these poor animals. Let them at least make a gaushala so that old, abandoned and injured cows and bulls can be cared for,” said Nayak, adding that it is difficult to attend to the animals as they don’t allow themselves to be touched.

“Right now there are two injured bulls in the NMPT area, where one of our volunteers Tauseef Ahmed is administering on the spot care. There is a an injured cow in the Car street area where Ravi, Suresh and Srinivas – all ACT staff – are administering on the spot care,” she said.

“We have a staff of just 8 people. We needed 20 to 25 people to just carry the injured buffalo. It is not possible for us alone to capture the animals and transport them for care. The government needs to get involved,” she added.
