Mangaluru: As the city returned to normalcy after being battered by torrential rains, on Tuesday, Mangaluru City Corporation Mayor Bhaskar K, on Friday informed that the loss expected due to the deluge is estimated at Rs 41,38,000 lakhs in the limits of the Mangaluru City Corporation Limits.
Holding a press meet at his office, City Corporation Mayor Bhaskar K informed that as many as 16 houses were fully damaged , 13 houses considerably damaged and 18 houses were partially damaged in the Mangaluru City Corporation Limits.
Revealing that the city had received 215mm rainfall in just four hours, the Mayor said, “Prior to the heavy rainfall, the MCC had taken up dredging and de-silting works throughout the city, but due to the heavy rainfall and waste accumulation in the drains had obstructed smooth flow of water. This caused floods in several part of the city,” he said adding that high tide in the Sea water was another reason which added to flooding.
Further, he said that he had visited the flood hit areas of 60 wards in the MCC. “District administration will provide proper compensation to the victims who suffered huge losses due to the rains,” he added.
The MCC has already formed 60 gangs in all the 60 wards to tackle emergency situations arising during the rains. The MCC will also constitute a special gang in the city and five nodal officers will be appointed to look into the problems that arise during rain season, he informed.
Corporator Shashidar Hegde said that the Deputy Commissioner has constituted a committee to find out the encroachments of sewage in the city.
