Mangaluru: After MLC Ivan D’Souza urged the state government to provide compensation to the flood victims on lines of relief given to Kodagu by coalition government, former minister K Abhayachandra Jain too has kept forth the same demand.
Addressing the reporters here on Wednesday, Jain said, “district Congress leaders had been to the flood-affected areas of Belthangady and assessed the loss. As per the survey, over 1000 acres of agriculture land has vanished and three huge bridges have been damaged. If 300 houses were completely damaged, over 500 houses are partially damaged. Those who are residing along the riversides have lost their property and crops. Hence state government should provide special compensation to the Belthangady flood-affected families, on the line of the Kodagu model”.
Informing about the relief given to the flood-affected families of Kodagu Jain said, “when heavy rain lashed Kodagu district last year, H D Kumarswamy led coalition government had compensated them effectively. The government had released Rs 10 lakh for those who lost their houses completely and Rs 10,000 as the monthly house rent until the families build their own houses. Though Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has visited the flood-affected areas of the district, he has announced Rs 5 lakh for those who lost their houses completely and announced Rs 5,000 as the monthly house rent. It is not enough and Yediyurappa should announce compensation on lines of relief given to Kodagu”.
Meanwhile, Jain informed that a delegation of Congress leaders would meet CM in Bengaluru shortly and request him to provide special compensation to the Belthangady flood-affected families.
Congress leaders Vishwasdas, Raghuraj among others were present.
