Mangaluru: A one-day cardiology conference “SPECTRUM – 2019” was organized by A J Hospital and Research Centre on Saturday, January 12, at Ocean Pearl. The 8th edition of the conference attracted over 350 delegates- mainly cardiologists, physicians, and post-graduates from all over Karnataka and the neighbouring states.
Padmashree Dr C N Manjuanth, Director of SJICS & R, Bengaluru, was the chief guest of the occasion. Former Professor and Head of Cardiology, KMC, Manipal, Prof Dr SGS Prabhu and Dean of A J Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru, Dr Ashok Hegde were the guests of honour. The event was presided over by President of the A J Group of Institutions Dr A J Shetty.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr AJ Shetty and the other dignitaries by lighting the lamp.
After being felicitated for his contribution to the field of cardiology, Padmashree Dr C N Manjunath said, “Air pollution is the highest risk factor for heart disease, and 50% of the deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases. Doctors should follow three points- talk, touch and treat.”
“Today, the medical field has become a war zone, where doctors are the soldiers. They get assaulted by the relatives of their patients, and hospitals are even vandalized. But the law in our country is lacking in providing security to doctors,” added Dr Manjunath.

Eminent speakers from India and abroad graced the conference that included lectures, debates and interactive sessions in various areas of cardiology.
The inaugural programme was followed by talks on cardiology-related topics by eminent speakers. The conference concluded with an interactive session by moderator Dr Abdul Mansoor, Interventional Cardiologist, Indiana Hospital, Mangaluru.
Earlier, a session on ‘Points to Ponder: Courage and orbita trials results’ was conducted by Dr B V Manjunath, chief cardiologist, A J Hospital and Research Centre, and Prof and HOD of cardiology at A. J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru. The session was followed by a panel discussion was conducted by Dr S K L David Sim- a senior consultant, national heart centre, Singapore.
Dr Samreen Jaffar and Dr Jithin Abraham Jacob of AJ Hospital and Research Centre compeered the programme. Dr B V Manjunath welcomed the guests and Dr R Purushotham delivered a vote of thanks.
