Mangaluru: Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar informed that “As many as 38 Sri Lankan nationals have been detained over illegal stay in the country under Mangaluru south police station limits on Friday June 11.”

Addressing media persons here he said, “Thirty-eight Sri Lankans illegally entered Tamil Nadu and arrived in Mangaluru a month ago. They claimed to be daily wage and coolie workers, as well as fishermen from Tamil Nadu, and stayed in two lodges and two residences for the last month and a half.”

“There were 39 Sri Lankans in total, with 38 of them being held. A person in his or her late sixties or early seventies returned a few weeks ago. We’ll track him down as well. We filed a complaint under the IPC for people trafficking, cheating, the Passport Act of 1967, the Foreigners Act of 1945, and the Foreigners Order of 1948. We’ll dig deep into the case to find the coordinators who assisted them in providing shelter and were part of a broader conspiracy,” he added.

“In Tamil Nadu, there is a well-organized racket where individuals are promised work in Canada. We’ll look into it further because someone must have coordinated in Mangaluru as well. Without a network or coordination, it is impossible for 38 Sri Lankans to stay in Mangaluru for a month,” he stated.

DCP Law and Order Hariram Shankar, ACP north Ranjith, and others were present.
