Mangaluru: The mistakes in the voter identity cards will be corrected immediately at the Taluk office here where three separate counters have been opened, Mangaluru Tahsildar Guruprasad has said.
Informing the Taluk Panchayath members during the Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat general meeting on September 18, he said, people should apply under form No 9, which is available in Taluk office. The three separate counters are meant for the residents of Moodbidri, Mangaluru City and Mangaluru North division.”
Meanwhile, Taluk Panchayat President Mohammed Monu complained about the deletion of names from the voters’ list. He said, “As the Lok Sabha election is nearing, all the mistakes in voter ID cards need to be rectified immediately. Deletion of names from the voters’ list is equal to rejecting the voting right of a person. If a person dies, his name should be deleted from the voters’ list. If not, it affects the polling percentage”, he said.
Meanwhile, a taluk panchayath member Vajrakshi P Shetty threw light on the various mistakes in the voter ID cards. “Instead of deleting the dead person, it seems officials are deleting the names of those who are alive. The address details are also wrongly mentioned in the cards”, she said.
Responding to it, the Tahsildar informed that if the relevant documents were shown to the staff concerned at the counter, corrections would be made immediately.
‘Why BPL card to those who have two cars and why not for poor people?’
Another member Shubhalatha Shetty questioned the officials of food department alleging that the poor people were denied the BPL ration cards. “There were several instances wherein the BPL cards were provided to the rich having even two cars in their family. If the government can provide BPL card to the wealthy, what prevents them from doing the same for the poor?”, she questioned.
However, the officials did not answer this convincingly stating that if there were any cases, the public could inform the department and action would be taken. The members urged the officials to verify the details of the applicants before issuing the BPL cards.
‘No ration card to a Dalit family, even though they applied two years ago’
Vajrakshi Shetty complained that a Dalit family had applied for a ration card two years ago online. However, the family has not received the ration card so far. When the officials were questioned about the status of the application, they asked the family to apply for the same again. “How many times should a person apply for obtaining a ration card?”, she questioned. Tahsildar Guruprasad asked the officials of the food department to look into the case and take all measures to ensure that the family gets the ration card immediately.
A separate meeting to discuss bribe issue
Before starting the meeting taluk panchayat member Ravishankar Someshwar demanded a clarification on the alleged bribe case of Taluk Panchayath Executive Officer Sadanand. “The EO allegedly demanding a bribe from Panchayat Development Officers and the video footage of the same going viral has affected the reputation of the Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat”, he said. When other members urged to convene a separate meeting to discuss this issue instead of wasting the time in taluk panchayat general meeting, a decision to that effect was taken.
Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat Vice President Poornima Ganesh, Moodbidri Tahsildar Dr. Rashmi, DK district Zilla Panchayat Vice President Kasthuri Panja, ZP Standing Committee President Janardhan Gowda, Taluk Panchayat Standing Committee presidents Reta Noronha and U P Ibrahim were present.
