19th Annual Rotary Orphanage Olympics to be held on Nov 19

Mangaluru: The Rotary Club of Mangalore Central jointly with Rotaract Club of Mangalore City as a part of their community development oriented projects, are organising the “19th Annual Rotary Orphanage Olympics” at Sri Ramakrishna PU College, Mangaluru on Sunday, November 19 at 9 AM. This one day long sports competition and cultural festival event is organised exclusively for the 600 children residing in 11 different orphanages in and around Mangaluru. The programme aims to bring a smile on the faces of those children, who are deprived of parental love and affection, for at least one day in a year.

Organizing committee chairman Rtn. Dr. Devdas Rai, in his address to the members of the media, revealed that T R Suresh, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru will be the chief guest and inaugurate the event. The Assistant Governor RI District 3181 Zone II, 2017-18 Rtn. PHF Naveen Kumar will grace the occasion as guest of honour and Rotary Club of Mangalore Central President Rtn. Raymond D’Cunha will preside over the function.

The Inter Orphanage sports event will comprise of individual events like the 100 mtrs running race, frog race, sack race, lemon & spoon race, book balancing race and tug of war as a team event. The cultural competition will be in the afternoon session. After the spectacular and colourful march past by the different teams, the children will showcase their athleticism and cultural talents.

The valedictory ceremony will be held at Sri Ramakrishna PU College, Mangaluru at 5 PM where Governor Rtn. MPHF Rohinath P will grace the occasion as chief guest and will distribute the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the competition and also award the trophy to an orphanage for their overall performance.

The club initiated this fun fare festival of sports and cultural events in the year 1996. It is its aim to provide a platform for the enthusiastic children on this special day, to display their hidden talents and exhibit their sporting skills. It is a rare opportunity for them to be able to join the mainstream. It also gives them a sense of freedom and a feeling of enjoyment and serves as a memorable day in their lives.

President of Rotary Club Raymond D’Cunha, Secretary Prakashchandra, Vice President Rotaract Club Rtr. Shivashankar Bhat & Secretary Sharath were present at the press meet.
