Mandya: All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice-president Rahul Gandhi will not be allowed to visit the district if the state government does not stop release of water to Tamil Nadu, said JD(S) MP C S Puttaraju here on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters MP said that chief minister Siddaramaiah had taken an all-party delegation to meet PM Narendra Modi. During the meet CM had declared that water will not be released to Tamil Nadu. But now by not keeping his word, he is cheating the farmers. Therefore we will protest when Rahul Gandhi comes, MP said.

The MP added that if crops fail due to water shortage, the state government should pay the affected farmers compensation on par with the market value of their produce.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit the relatives of a farmer who committed suicide in Haveri and Mandya districts, interact with farmers, and address a convention of newly elected panchayat members, during his two-day tour of Karnataka.

KPCC sources said that, Rahul, who is to arrive in the state on October 6, will visit many places in Mandya where the highest number of farmer suicides in the state has been recorded, and interact with the farming community.

His will also attend the KPCC’s executive committee meeting in Bengaluru.
