Mandya: ‘Kicchu Harisodu’ is an integral part of the Makara Sankranthi celebration in the southern part of Karnataka. During this ritual, the bovines are made to jump over a raging fire.
However, the same ritual became the cause for death of one person in Mandya.
Ravi, 35, a resident of Chikkaballi in Mandya taluk was the person who succumbed to the burn injuries. At the time of Sankranti celebrations, he had sustained burn injuries while taking the cows across the fire.
“He had sustained 80% injuries. He was rushed to Mysuru hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to the injuries,” said police.
Though the practice has raged animal rights activists, the agrarian society believes that the plunge across the fire keeps the cattle free from diseases the whole year.
