Mandya: Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, on Tuesday, June 18, visited the house of the farmer who recently committed suicide and consoled his family members. The lake in the Aghalaya village in K R Pet has dried up which pushed a debt-ridden farmer Suresh (50) to hang himself.
Before committing suicide, Suresh had captured a selfie video in which he had requested to help farmers by filling the lakes of Santhebachahalli Hobli with water from the Hemavathi reservoir. He had also requested H D Kumaraswamy to attend his funeral.
CM HDK on Tuesday, visited the house of Suresh in Aghalaya village and issued a compensation cheque of Rs 5 Lakh to the bereaved family. He also assured a government job for Suresh's son or daughter.
Before meeting Suresh's family members, Kumaraswamy visited the lake in Aghalaya village and directed the Minor Irrigation and District In-charge Minister C S Puttaraju to fill the lakes of Santhebachahalli Hobli.
"Loan waiver is not the only solution to prevent farmers from committing suicide. Action will be taken to stop private loan lending business. A rule will be implemented to stop loan lending business after discussing the matter in the next legislative assembly," HDK said.
Kumaraswamy told farmers, "Do not commit suicide. Think about your family members. No matter how hard the situation is that you are going through, be brave and learn to face it."
"All the lakes across the state have to be filled. Suresh has requested to fill the lakes of Santhebachahalli Hobli, before he committed suicide. All the lakes of this Hobli will soon be filled at a cost of Rs 213 Crore," he added.
"Farmers should not commit suicide. My decision to reside in a village is not a gimmick, but to instill confidence and strength among the people of the villages," said CM Kumaraswamy.
