Farmer arrested during Cauvery unrest attempts suicide in Mandya jail

Mandya: A farmer who was lodged in jail after being arrested for protesting during Cauvery water dispute attempted suicide in District Prison here. He is said to be out of danger.

The person is Arun (25) from Pandavapura. It is said that Arun was immensely disturbed by the fact that he was put behind bars for fighting for his rights and hence resorted to consuming some pills with the intention of ending life. The pills had rendered him ill and the prison authorities who noticed this rushed Arun to KIMS for treatment.

MLA K S Puttannaiah and litterateur Devanoor Mahadeva visited Arun in the hospital and had a talk with him.

Addressing the reporters, Puttannaiah said that 50 to 60 farmers were arrested by the police during the Cauvery riots and Arun was one of them. He said that the police should make sure that people fighting for their rights are no arrested. “When innocents are arrested these kinds of tragedy take place,” he said adding that he will even meet the CM had inform him about the incident.
