Mandya: Following the seemingly unending controversy regarding the Chief Minister’s stance on the issue of farm loan waivers in the state, H D Kumaraswamy, true to his word, turned up in Mandya on August 11 to join the farmers in transplanting the first paddy crop of the monsoon season.

In a curt retort to allegations of charade by the opposition parties, CM H D Kumaraswamy said he was genuinely shouldering the burden of the farmers.

He was speaking to media after transplanting paddy at the Sitapura village in the Mandya district.

The CM reiterated the government’s commitment on the issue of farm loan waivers and said that plans were afoot to waive off loans of the farmers pending with the nationalised banks in the state. “We have already released Rs 9,000 Crore required to waive off farm loans accumulated in the cooperative banks. The coalition government will fulfill all the promises made to the farmers,” he assured.

He also appealed to the farmers to desist from committing suicide. The doors of his office and home were open to all farmers at all times, he added.

“I am with the farmers. I intend to launch new agricultural schemes to respond to the farmers’ plight. I will set aside one day in every month to involve myself in farm activities in all the districts,” he added.

Meanwhile, the CM’s tweet on his official Twitter page regarding his one-day stint as a farmer has received a mixed response from the Twitteratti. While many have commended the Chief Minister stating that he has set an example for other politicians to follow, others have termed this as a publicity stunt.
