Mandya: The ‘Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe’ campaign initiated this year by actress Alia Bhatt, brought light to 40 huts in the Kikkeri village in the K R Pet taluk near here through the #LiterOfLight initiative. The residents of these huts saw electric lights in their homes at night for the first time in their lives.

Working in tandem with AROHA, a Bengaluru based organisation that donates solar lamps to the poorer sections of society, and Standard Electricals, Bhatt provided solar lamps to these 40 huts, the residents of which had been struggling to obtain electricity for their homes for a long time. Even those orphaned by a fire in the area 10 years ago, had no place to shelter them. The government only provided them with BPL cards and nothing more.

The members of AROHA were passing by the village in the evening when they noticed that the residents were engulfed by darkness. That is when they decided to help them out and also enlisted the help of Alia Bhatt. AROHA is an organisation that donates solar lamps to the poor, with money sourced from recycling plastic bottles.

Under the campaign ‘Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe’, Alia Bhatt has been auctioning her clothes worn on special occasions, including those worn on shoots, and donates the money received for charitable causes.

The actress took to Twitter to announce the success of the project: “The amazing response to ‘Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe’ enabled us to light up homes of 40 families living in darkness in Kikkeri through the #LiterOfLight initiative. Thank you @StdElectricals for helping us install eco-friendly solar lamps, brightening 200 lives #Coexist.”
