Madikeri: Brave soldier Sapper H N Mahesh who had won Shaurya Chakra Award for his ultimate courage in combating terrorists, risking his life, has now returned to his hometown here on Monday, July 1.
He has returned home for rest after suffering a serious injury on his head.
Mahesh, who was on a holiday, had to return to duty on May 15. On May 29, he suffered a major injury on his head due to the bullets fired at him by the terrorists during the security operations in Shopian of Jammu and Kashmir.
In spite of being severely injured, he did not back off and kept battling with the terrorists attacking from their hiding. At this point, his colleagues pushed him back and blasted the terror inflicted area with explosives.
The bullet had entered his head close to his right ear and pierced through his jaw line. As a result, the bullet was partly visible through his nose.
He was rushed to the military hospital at Chandigarh where he underwent a surgery with 50 stitches on his face.
He was in comma and after several days of treatment, he recovered.
Mahesh has taken part in the military operation earlier and till date, has killed eight terrorists.
In a military operation of August 2018 which was carried out at Shopian, he had gunned down two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists and had caused severe injury to one more.
For his valorous act, he was awarded Shaurya Chakra by the President of India, Ramnath Kovind in March 2019.
