Madikeri: Nagesh Kaloor, a scholar from Kaloor village and a victim of last year’s natural calamity, has expressed his outrage on the government, stating, “The government has failed to provide houses to the flood victims at convenient locations and instead, is allotting them in far away places, causing more trouble to the already suffering victims.”

The Madikeri Rotary Misty Hills had conducted a programme to distribute Rs 10,000 each to 20 flood victim families on Wednesday, June 12. Speaking on the occasion, Nagesh said “It has been almost a year since the flood victims lost their houses to the natural calamities in the district and the government has not yet been successful in providing suitable accommodation to the victims. The government has not even arranged for a proper meeting with the flood victims to understand our actual requirements.”

“Flood victims who lost their houses within a particular gram panchayat are being allotted houses at far away places. Houses are being allotted by drawing lotteries and the victims are being forced to stay away from their original locations. Flood victims who are already vulnerable after losing everything they had, are getting more depressed due to this,” he added.

“The government is not taking any measures to clear the sediments in lakes. If the sediments in the lakes are not cleared, the lakes will overflow during heavy rains, causing more trouble to the villagers,” said Nagesh.

Nagesh opined that the reasons for last year’s disaster were the uncleared sediments settled in the Harangi reservoir and not releasing the water from here on time. He cautioned that a similar fate would follow this year, if the sediments were not cleared on time.

He thanked the Rotary Misty Hills on behalf of the flood victims of Kaloor village, for distributing the cheques.

Rotary Misty Hills President G R Ravishankar, Secretary M U Mahesh, President-elect Jagadeesh M R, former presidents Mohan Prabhu, Ravindra Rai, A K Vinod, Anil H T, Dr. C R Prashanth, Vice President M P Nagaraj and Treasurer Gnana Prashanth distributed the cheques to the flood victims.
