Madikeri: Tipu Jayanthi celebrations passed off peacefully in the district despite situation remaining volatile prior to this day in Kodagu. Barring partial yet successful bandh by right wing activists, the situation remained under control due to heavy police presence in the district.

MLA Appachu Ranjan, MLC Sunil Subramani were taken into preventive custody from the fort premises in Madikeri whereas MLA K G Bopaiah courted arrest in Virajpet under Section 71 of the State Police Act opposing Tipu Jayanthi.

The district administration had arranged celebrations at 10 AM in the morning in the Fort Complex auditorium and at the same time, right wing activists belonging to Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishat (VHP) and Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) marched towards the programme venue from Omkareshwar temple to stall the day’s proceedings. They shouted slogans in unison against the state government for organising the Jayanthi despite stiff opposition.

Tension prevailed for some time as the protestors argued with the Rapid Action Force (PAF) personnel and district police but were taken into preventive custody immediately.

The district observed bandh and most business establishments remained closed. Central and state government offices including banks and post offices functioned normally with few people availing services. State government buses operated skeletal services and few protestors vandalised a bus. Few right wing activists tore the seats of a bus opposing their arrest. Few private vehicles were seen plying in town and rural areas.

Some activists tried to block the main roads in Chettalli and Kadagadalu towns last night by placing huge wooden logs but police cleared them before dawn.
BJP MLC Sunil Subramani who arrived sporting black badge to take part in the celebrations recalled the “atrocities by Tipu” during his regime and said the government should have been apprised of the resistance by local Congress leaders including “injustice meted to Kodavas, Christians and others. Opposing his stance, Congress leaders like K P Chandrakala shouted slogans in favour of the celebrations and confusion prevailed at the programme venue for some time.

When MLA Appachu Ranjan and MLC Sunil Subramani insisted on protesting at the official programme venue, they were immediately whisked away by the police and taken in police vehicles. However, all protestors were released after some time.

Later MLC Veena Achaiah presided over the programme which was inaugurated by T P Ramesh, Chairman, State Silk Board. Noted writer B R Rangaswamy delivered a lecture on Tipu.
