Madikeri: It is estimated that the zilla Panchayath has beared a damage of Rs 321 crores for 2,486.83 kms of road, Rs 19.27 crores for 125 bridges, Rs 8.65 crores for 160 buildings, Rs 168.94 crores for road barriers due to heavy rains and floods in the district.
The total amount of the damage beared is estimated to Rs 517.86 crores. But only Rs 33.15 crores has been released to the Panchayath. Therefore, Zilla Panchayath President, B.A Harish has appealed to the district in-charge minister Sa. Ra Mahesh to immediately release Rs 50 crores to repair the damaged roads and bridges.
No funds were granted under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) to Kodagu district to solve drinking water problem the previous year. Release of Rs 50.cr was requested to solve the issue, but only Rs 9.74 crores has been confirmed. Drinking water problem cannot be fixed in that amount. Digging of wells, construction of drinking water tanks and jack wells, and installation of pipelines are very much required in the rural areas, said the ZP President.
B.A Harish also appealed to Sa. Ra Mahesh to release an additional Rs 50 cr to tackle the problem of lack of natural water resources due to the collapse of many hills during the heavy rains and floods in the district this year.
