Kodagu DC takes measures to control rampant illicit liquor trade

Madikeri: Kodagu DC Dr.Richard Vincent D’Souza instructed excise officials to take strict measures to control illicit liquor trade in the district after receiving complaints from public.

Chairing a meeting in the auditorium of district administration building, Dr Richard D’Souza instructed Assistant Commissioner (AC) in the excise department to empower people on the ill effects caused by using spurious liquor on health by conducting workshops. At the same time he instructed them to intensify search operations, employ squads to trace those involved in the trade and keep vigil on sale of liquor through unauthorized outlets.

Speaking on the occasion excise Assistant Commissioner Shivanna said, 221 places were raided in the last 3 months and 16 complaints have been booked. Around 29 liters of illicit liquor and 235 liters of jaggery waste used in the trade seized during the operations, he confirmed.

In addition he said, 764 unauthorized outlets were raided and 12 serious and 29 normal complaints were booked. As many as 123 liters of liquor too was seized in those operations.

It may be recalled, villagers forced closure of an illegal liquor sales outlet near Nanjarayapatna after several days of protest.
