Exploited women can avail upto Rs 10 Lakh in compensation: Judge Noorunnisa

Madikeri: “A woman who is abused and exploited should get a compensation of upto Rs 10 Lakh, according to the Women Victims Compensation Act,” said Noorunnisa, Senior Civil Judge and District Legal Services Authority Member Secretary.

Noorunnisa, who presided over the ‘Media Field and Legal Dialogue’ programme, which was conducted by Kodagu Press Club, said that a woman who is a victim of abuse should approach the police and an FIR should be filed. “The court will sanction 25 percent of the compensation amount to the victim at the very beginning of the case,” informed the Senior Civil Judge.

“There are laws to stop social paedophilia such as child marriage. Also, all the people involved in child marriage, from parents to the owners of the wedding hall and even the guests who attend the child marriage can be booked for the crime. If proven guilty, the accused will be slapped with a fine of upto Rs 1 Lakh and could also get a sentence of 2 years,” said Noorunnisa.

“The POCSO Act was enacted for the protection of girls under the age of 18 and it is mandatory to obtain the approval of the POCSO Special Court to publish the cases of exploitation in the media,” she added.

P Krishnamoorthi, Senior Lawyer and Ajjikutteera Suraj, President, Kodagu District Children Welfare Committee were present in the event.
