Somwarpet: Unable to repay the loans, a farmer couple of Thakeri village committed suicide here on Wednesday, December 5 noon.
The deceased are M Appaiah (81) and Bolamma (75).
The couple had brought a ladder and entered a coffee estate tying two ropes that is one on a silver tree and another on a tamarind tree. Eventually, the couple committed suicide.
It is understood that on Wednesday morning their son and daughter-in-law had left for a marriage function, during which they had decided to take this extreme step.
In the evening, when they returned home after the marriage function, on not finding the parents, they went on a search along with the family members and found them dead.
The reason for suicide is said to be the destruction of their coffee and black pepper crops due to the floods that had hit the district in the month of August this year.
They had availed a a loan of Rs 4 Lakh from the cooperative society for these crops. As the crops were destroyed completely, the couple was in a fear of being unable to repay it.
Their son Kalappa has filed a complaint in the Somwarpet Police Station.
