Somwarpet: A group of residents of Convent Bane in the town protested in front of the Chowdlu Gram Panchayat office demanding reliable water supply to the area on May 24.
The residents complain that they do not get adequate water for the past three months. “The panchayat has not responded to the petitions and complaints of the people so far”, said a resident of the colony Vincy D’Souza.
Enraged by the apathy of the panchayat officials, people confronted the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) and other officials. “When we ask for our basic right of water, the officials shirk responsibility by giving reasons of election duty, model code of conduct and so on. Don’t they arrange water for the election purposes?”, questioned the ladies among the protesters.
There is a bore-well in the Convent Bane colony, but there is no other alternative arrangement for drinking water during summer months. The protesters alleged that the panchayat president receives 24×7 water supply at his house. “We cannot tolerate this injustice”, the residents said.
PDO Sumesh clarified to the locals that the works were delayed due to the election process. He also assured to solve the water problem in the colony within 4-5 days.
