Madikeri: A man, who was born as a Christian and later embraced Islam died and his last rites were performed as per Hindu traditions.

The incident took place at Gopalapura in Somwarpete taluk.

Vargheese alias Yousuf (68) is the deceased person. He was living all alone in Gopalapura over the last several years.

As a young man, he had fallen in love with a Muslim lady from Mangaluru and thus he embraced her religion to marry her. With a major change in life, he became Yousuf.

While his family- his wife and two sons aged 24 and 22 years are living in Mangaluru, he continued to live all alone in Gopalpura.

When he fell sick a few days ago, the family did not come to take care of him. His neighbors took him to a local hospital, from where he was later taken to Madikeri for treatment.

When the family members were not by his side, the neighbors got worried. With no other option left, they brought the matter to the notice of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Shivarame Gowda faction) Taluk President Francis.

Soon Yousuf passed away in the Madikeri hospital. When the family members of Yousuf told the Vedike activists that they were not coming to Madikeri to perform the last rites, the activists decided to do what they thought was right.

They first approached the local church and urged the priests to make way for the last rites of the deceased. However, the Church said that since he had embraced another religion, the request cannot be met by the church.

When their pleas to Shanivarasanthe Masjid and SDPI fell on deaf ears, the activists decided to do perform the last rites of the man as per Hindu tradition at a local Hindu Rudrabhumi.
