Koppal: The incident of Janata Dal (Secular) councillor slapping an independent woman councillor during the election to the City Municipal Council top positions on March 11 has become a major political issue.
Accordingly, Superintendent of Police Tyagarajan has formed a special team of police to investigate the incident and Karnataka State Women’s Commission chairperson Manjula Manasa had decided to register a suo motu case against the JD(S) councillor Channabasappa Kotyal for slapping independent councillor Vijaya Hiremath.
Meanwhile, state JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy has sought a detailed report from his party leaders in the district on the incident, sources added.
The slapgate video has gone viral on social media earning lot of criticism from the netizens.
According to sources, Vijaya Hiremath was instrumental in ensuring three JD(S) councillors’ support for BJP candidate Gavisiddappa Chinnor. She is also said to have promised to back the BJP candidate.
However, Vijaya Hiremath switched over her loyalty at the eleventh hour, facilitating victory of Congress-backed independent councillor Mahendra Chopra. This u-turn seems to have triggered clash in the election hall itself, resulting in the JD(S) councillor slapping Vijaya.
