Somwarpet: Kodagu district has performed exceptionally well in the sales of Indian Made Liquor (IML) in March.
As per Excise Department records, it had set a target of selling 1,11,796 IML cases in March, but sold 1,23,321 cases, which is nearly 8 per cent more.
In 2014-15, the district consumed 10,22,264 IML cases, while the target was 11,50,000 cases, which is 12 per cent less. In the fiscal year 2015-16, the department achieved 90 per cent of its target by selling 10,88,850 cases of IML, while the target was 12,09,827 cases.
The surge in sales is attributed to the fact that the traders stocked liquor to avoid a 2.5 per cent additional excise duty burden from April 1.
Every year the department fixes a target 10 per cent higher that the the sales in the preceding year. As temperatures are rising in the district, so has the sale of beer in March.
People consumed a whopping 58,399 cases of beer during the month, while just 41,978 cases were sold in March 2015. In 2014-15, the district consumed 3,38,041 cases of beer which rose to 3,87,954 cases in 2015-16.
