Kodagu: On Wednesday, forest officials of the Kodagu district, after a four-hour long operation, managed to rescue five elephants from a water reservoir in the Palangala village of the Virajpet taluk.

The elephants are believed to have gotten stuck in the reservoir while they were looking for water in the darkness of the night.

Forest officials were alerted about the situation by a local coffee grower and although they reached the spot at around 8 AM on Wednesday, the rescue operation was delayed as the earthmoving machine arrived late.

According to the Regional Forest Officer, rescue operations were successfully carried out by the officials who formed two groups- one to dig out a way for the animals with the machine and another to scare them in the direction of the cleared path and into the forest by using fire crackers. By 11.30 AM, the rescue mission was complete.

Recently, locals and officials rescued around nine elephants from water reservoirs, however, last week, one elephant was shot dead by unidentified persons. The forest officials are currently investigating the case.
