Madikeri: Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman assured to provide Rs 7 Crore in aid through Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) for rescue and relief works in the flood-affected regions of Kodagu district.
Speaking at a media conference held here on August 24, Sitaram informed that the sum could be used by the district administration for providing urgent assistance to the people affected by the natural disaster. She also promised to donate an additional Rs 1 Crore from her MPLADS funds for the rescue efforts in the district.
To repair the damaged roads and highways and restore access to areas cut off from the city, a technical team from the Border Road Organisation (BRO) will be dispatched to Kodagu soon, she added.
“The union government will release disaster relief funds only after a thorough assessment of the damage caused by the deluge. The quantum of funds will be decided after studying the proposal of the state government about the extent of the damages,” Sitaraman said. She also assured to convey the problems and challenges faced by the people of the district to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Earlier in the day, Sitaraman visited and consoled the victims of the floods residing at the temporary relief centres at Madapura Government Higher Primary School, Shri Lakshminarasimha Kalyana Mantapa and Maitri Police Auditorium.
