BJP denied permission for yatra in Kodagu

Kodagu: The 75-day Nava Karnataka Nirmana Parivarthana Yatra planned by the BJP has not got the go-ahead in Kodagu district, comprising of two Assembly constituencies – Madikeri and Virajpet , it is reported.

The reason for the denial is being attributed to the Tipu Jayanti celebrations scheduled for November 10, which has been vehemently opposed by the BJP.

The district administration has cited law and order problems while denying the permission for the saffron rally led by BJP state Chief B S Yeddyurappa that aims to traverse 7,500 km, touching all 224 Assembly constituencies to expose the misdeeds of the Congress government.

The district, it may be recalled has witnessed violent clashes during Tipu Jayanti celebrations earlier too. This year round, in the run up to the event several BJP leaders, including union minister Ananth Kumar Hegde have excused themselves from participating in the celebrations. Recently, Hegde termed Tipu a “mass rapist” and “brutal killer” of Hindus, thereby stoking a fresh controversy. BJP MP Pratap Simh, who represents the Kodagu-Mysuru Lok Sabha Constituency too has been vocal in protesting against the Tipu Jayanti.

Though BJP leaders are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the rally touches at least the border district, their plea has not been honoured by the authorities.

Madikeri and Virajpet Assembly constituencies are represented by MP Appacchu Ranjan and KG Bopaiah respectively – both being from BJP. Despite the party’s strong hold in the region, the rally would be missing out on one of its prominent pockets. And this has certainly become a bitter pill for the BJP to swallow.
