Karwar: A woman from local fishing community tried to immolate self after the local taluk administration tried to evacuate a temporary hutment in the area on April 20.
Kusuma Kudtalkar (45) doused herself in kerosene and tried to immolate self, when taluk administration officials tried to clear five huts on the sea shore.
She was admitted to district hospital and discharged later.
The fishing community has been using the area for drying fish, repairing fishing nets and other related actvities. The local taluk administration has been making repeated attempts to drive the people away from the area. Temporary hutments are erected in no time after every eviction drive, said officials during the eviction drive.
However, people in the area have accused the district administration of killing their livelihood for development and tourism purpose by encroaching upon their territory.
Restrictions should be imposed on Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) authorities, who are busy constructing large permanent structures causing severe damage to environment in the area, they said.
Its unbecoming of the authorities to drive fisher folk who have been involved in traditional fishing for ages, they added.
