Karwar: The district administration has urged the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure that the fishermen from Uttara Kannada district, who have been kept under detention by Iranian authorities are released at the earliest.
Deputy Commissioner SS Nakul has informed that several youth from the region have been working for fishing sector in the UAE. As many as 18 fishermen from the district employed in Dubai had ventured into the sea for fishing and crossed into Iranian border. The fishermen have been kept under detention by the Iranian authorities in the boat itself from July 27, 2018 till date.
Worried about their safety, their families living in Uttara Kannada district have urged the DC to take up the issue. It is said that the arrested youth had sent whatsapp messages to their family members urging for help and informed that two of the UAE nationals who were with them were sent to prison while the rest have been kept under detention in the boat over the last four months.
There are six persons from Kumta and Bhatkal each, three from Murudeshwar and one each from Honnavar, Ankola and Shiroor.
