Karwar: Two boats carrying 13 fishermen on board were stranded 21 nautical miles (around 39 KM) off Karwar coast due to cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea. Rescue teams managed to rescue 11 fishermen but 2 are yet to be traced as one of the boats capsized in the turbulent deep seas.
Two fishing boats named Angelina-1 and Angelina-2 with 13 fishermen from Tamil Nadu,ventured into deep seas for fishing. Both the boats were caught off guard in the high tides.One of the boats sank in the sea,while another boat’s engine was damaged.
Fisheries Department Deputy Director Santosh Koppad informed that 11 of the 13 fishermen were safe.
As soon as the information was relayed to Indian Coast Guard team, rescue operations began. The rescue team in patrolling boat reached the spot 21 nautical miles off Karwar coast and managed to rescue 4 people from the sinking boat. But, two are still missing and search is on to trace them.
Coast Guard rescue teams from Mangalore and Goa were summoned for the purpose. Efforts are on to bring all the stranded safely home.
