Karwar: A truck carrying nuclear waste from Chennai to Kaiga atomic power plant in Karwar toppled near Bole village, sending panic waves among the villagers near the accident site on January 17.
Among the two heavy duty trucks, one toppled after the trailer portion got detached. The information about the mishap was relayed to the district administration and soon experts from Kaiga nuclear plant arrived at the spot. Only after them ascertaining that the truck was empty, villagers in surrounding areas heaved a sigh of relief.
However, enraged villagers said adequate safety measures must be taken by the authorities concerned to avoid a major catastrophe.
Kaiga Nuclear Power Reactor Director Sanjay Kumar ruled out the possibility of any leak. The environment is safe and there is no imminent danger, he added allaying fears among people in the surrounding areas.
