Karwar: “In order to maintain the law and order situation of the district, Section 144 will be in place from today till December 21,” said Deputy Commissioner Dr Harishkumar K in response to the bundh call in connection with the anti-CAA protests across the country.
In a press briefing on Thursday, December 19, he said, “Section 144 has been imposed to avoid any untoward incidents. Protests, demonstrations etc are expected from various organizations, which will affect normal life and the law and order situation of the district. Prohibitory orders have been imposed based on the reports received from the Superintendent of Police and as per the directions of the Karnataka Government Chief Secretary.”
Explaining past untoward incidents, DC Dr Harishkumar said, “In the past, there were several instances that were communally motivated, and cases of damage to public property, disruption of law and order and public life and several incidents were reported. The district is sensitive in terms of political and social matters. Hence, the district administration has decided to clamp Section 144 of the CrPC on the district.”
