Karwar: As many as 180 people have been arrested in connection to the communal disturbance that broke out following death of Paresh Mesta, a youth from Honnavar. Superintendent of Police Vinayak Patil said that the action has been taken based on the CCTV footage and video evidences of the riots and that no culprit will be spared.
“Special team has been formed to nab those who sparked violence in the region and all those who instigated violence will be brought to books,” he said adding that no innocent has been put behind bars as a thorough background check has been made before booking each one of the arrested persons.
Honnavar, Kumata and Sirsi regions have returned to normalcy after witnessing several days of violence following Mesta’s death. The department will decide if the security needs to be continued in the area or it can be called back, said the SP.
A section claimed that Mesta was tortured and charred to death by a members of a particular community. The BJP and the Hindutva outfits called for bundh after Mesta’s death during first week of December. However, the autopsy reports have refuted the claims of the protesters.
