No connection between Suvarna Tribhuja and INS Kochi: Naval Flag Officer

Karwar: Even as many have been alleging that the Suvarna Tribhuja fishing boat went missing after a mishap with INS Kochi, Karnataka Naval Area Flag Officer Rear Admiral RADM Mahesh Singh has said that there is no connection between the two.

Speaking to reporters from INS Kadamba, Singh said that though INS Kochi too suffered a few damages around the same time that Suvarna Tribhuja went missing, the damages suffered by INS Kochi were not due to collision with the fishing boat.

He said that Suvarna Tribhuja went missing near Malwan in Maharashtra, but the damage to INS Kochi happened at least 13 kms away from the said spot. Further, speaking about the possibilities of lifting the wreckage of Suvarna Tribhuja, Singh said that the debris is lying deep in the ocean and there is no equipment to support the operations. “It is not possible to lift the wreckage as of now,” he said.
The fishing vessel, with seven fishermen on board, went into the deep sea from Malpe harbour in Udupi district on December 13, 2018. On December 15, 2018, when the vessel was off Malwan, it lost contact with other fishing boats and harbour. Since then the vessel with seven crews missing had been missing. However, many months later, on May 1, 2019, INS Nireekshak ship found the wreckage 33 km off Malvan through ‘Side Scan Sonar’ technology.
Ever since the fishing boat went missing the locals had been holding INS Kochi responsible for the mysterious disappearance. While the wreckage has been spotted, there are no traces of the seven fishermen who went on board.
