Kumta: The protests carried out by Sangh Parivar following the death of a youth here in Kumta turned violent after the miscreants torched IGP Hemanth Nimbalkar’s car here on December 11.

It is learnt that the car driver has suffered injuries.

Condemning the death of Paresha Mesta, the Sangh Parivar members called for a bandh in Karwar, Honnavara, Kumta and Mundagoda here on November 11. In some of the places, the protests turned violent with 2 police vehicles, 4 buses getting damaged.

It is learnt that over 30 cops were injured after miscreants resorted to stone pelting. The cops posted at the spot however lathi-charged to disperse the mob.

It may be recalled that Mesta was found dead following a Hindu-Muslim group clash couple of days ago. Alleging that Mesta was murdered due to communal reasons, the Hindu organisations called for a bandh demanding immediate arrest of the persons behind the act.

The protests intensified on Monday with thousands of Hindu volunteers reaching Karwar from various taluks of the coastal belt. Some forcefully pulled down the shutters of the shops and commercial establishments. Anti government slogans were heard outside DC’s office during the protest rally. Tyres were set ablaze by some near London Bridge in the city who also held a rasta roko for over two hours. Traffic congestion left commuters high and dry on NH-66. The vehicles remained lined up upto 3 kms due to the same.

When fire fighters reached the spot to avert untoward incidents, the angry protesters pelted stones at the fire van.
