Karwar: The Karwar port in the Uttara Kannada district achieved the highest business last year. Now, the Port Department has come forward to make the port work 24 hours to facilitate the movement of ships even at night and generate more revenue.
The port witnessed the anchoring of 157 ships last year, which is the highest so far. The port currently has the facility to work from 6 AM to 6 PM.
Now a project costing about Rs 95 lakhs has been taken up to install night vision to guide the ships to the port at night.
Speaking to reporters Capt. Arun, head of the port department said, “The night vision equipment has already reached the port. Each equipment has a capacity to guide the ship for more than 500 metres, making it easy for the ships visiting the port during the night. Earlier, the ships had to wait till morning to leave the port after loading or unloading. Now it will be possible for the ships to leave at any time they want.”
“This facility is expected to bring more traffic to the port leading to higher income. The installation of the night vision equipment is underway and is expected to be completed in a few months” the captain informed.
