Karwar: The Indian Coast Guards rescued nine fishermen aboard a Tamil Nadu based boat who were stranded at sea on May 1.
It is gathered that the Tamil Nadu based boat St. Mary (Registration No: IND-TN- 15-MM- 3793) encountered engine problems. Without any power to propel the boat, it was drifting on the high seas for two days. As there was no boat nearby and as they were running out of ration and water on board, the boat crew on board alerted the Coast Guard Headquarters to be rescued.
On receiving the distress signal, the Indian Coast Guard Ship C-420 (ICGS C-420) was pressed into action. ICGS found that the boat’s engine crank shaft was damaged. As it was not feasible to carry out repairs at sea, the Coast Guards decided to tow the boat to save the crew.
Under the guidance of Coast Guard Commanding Officer Avinash Chitguppi, the coast guard personnel successfully rescued all the fishermen and brought them ashore at Karwar.
