Karwar: Gerusoppa forest of Honnavar has the fame of being the home for the Long-tailed Macaque. However, these Macaque are now diminishing in numbers and the department has opened its eyes to the situation and has decided to grow fruit-bearing tree varieties.

These shy species, endemic to the Western Ghats have contributed in a big way for tourism of the district. Gram Aranya Samitis have been doing their bit in protecting these species and now they have decided to plant over one lakh fruit-bearing saplings to generate food for the Long-tailed Macaque or ‘Singalika’.

It is said that there about 3,000 of these species living in India and over 1,000 are found in Karnataka alone. As per census done last June, 730 long-tailed Macaque were found in Honnavar.
