Karwar: Former minister R V Deshpande said that the recent floods have devastated property worth over Rs 10,000 cr in the state, but the state government has only sought relief of Rs 3,000 cr from the Centre.

“I have requested the Centre to release at least Rs 5,000 cr immediately,” he said after inspecting the flood-ravaged Ankola of the Uttara Kannada district on Friday.

Deshpande said that crops on 12 to 15 hectares of land have been lost, while over 10,000 houses have been damaged in the state. Pressing for appropriate relief, he said that the government must increase the amount of compensation to the victims after assessing the situation.

In the meanwhile, he also demanded relief of about Rs 500 cr for the Uttara Kannada district.

Terming the recent floods as nature’s warning, Deshpande said that there was an immediate need for human beings to understand that they need to grow with nature. “Everybody is busy looking for relief and nobody seems to be bothered about finding solutions,” he said, adding that encroachment of storm water drains and water bodies has caused the floods.

“Encroachment of water bodies must be stopped first. Only then can there be possibilities of averting floods in the future,” he said.
