Karwar: Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 24 distributed cheques worth Rs 5 Crore among 30 families (96 persons), who were rehabilitated under Operation Seabird (Naval Project).
The evacuees were waiting for compensation for the last 30 years. Minister distributed the compensation which is part of the rehabilitation package with regard to the land acquisition in 13 villages of the taluks Karwar and Ankola in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, for the purpose of creating a Naval Base.
A private land measuring 2,412 acres and 15 guntas located in 13 villages was acquired by the Government of India, Ministry of Defence (MoD).
