Karwar: A conman pretending to be employed in a senior position at Indian Railways and duping several youth after assuring them jobs was finally trapped.

Vijay Gajanikar, a resident of Sadashivagad, temporarily residing in Kolkata was trapped during his visit to his native in a dramatic manner. When one of the victims named Chandrakanth Vaigankar spotted him and demanded his money back, the former received threats instead. However, Chandrkanth succeeded in handing him over to the police, with assistance from the locals.

Vijay Gajanikar, with help from an accomplice named Manjunath has cheated over 60 youth from Karwar, Yellapur, Goa and Ankola assuring them of C and D’ grade jobs in railways. The fake recruitment racket ran into Rs 10 crore, it is learnt.

Vijay gained the confidence of the innocent job seekers by projecting himself as a B grade railways employee based in Kolkata, with close links to former union railway minister and present Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Vijay demanded Rs 6.5 Lakh for a C grade job and Rs 4.5 Lakh for a grade lower from his victims. Part of the money will go into the hands of the chief minister and railway officials as commission, he used to tell his victims.

Then he used to summon his victims in batches of 5 or 10 to Kolkata and subject them to medical tests at a government hospital there, a prerequisite for getting government jobs to gain their confidence.
After taking money from them, he issued fake fitness and recruitment letters and provided the hapless victims with railway uniform and shoes so that they do not suspect his modus operandi.

When victims started quizzing him over not getting any information, he used to escape by giving elusive answers each time.
