Aspirant misses UPSC exam, commits suicide

Karwar/New Delhi: A UPSC aspirant allegedly committed suicide in his room at Paharganj in Delhi on June 3.

The deceased student has been identified as Varun Chandra (26), a native of Karwar.

Lakhs of students appeared for the preliminary examination of the Civil Service Examination 2018 (commonly known as IAS exam) held on Sunday, June 3 all over the country. The aspirants are under huge pressure as the exam could make or break their hopes of entering the halls of bureaucracy in the country. Also, the fact that the exam takes a whole year to complete adds to the pressure.

Varun was assigned an exam centre in Paharganj. In a mix-up, he reached another centre. As Varun reached the exam centre late, he was denied entry by the invigilators the centre. Incidentally, UPSC had changed the rule for entry to the exam centre this year. It had informed that entry into exam hall will close 10 minutes before the start of the exam.

On returning to his room, Varun committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan. Police have recovered a suicide note from his room. A case stands registered at the Rajender Nagar Police Station in this regard.

As per sources close to the family, Varun was preparing for the exam for two years. He had also booked tickets to Mumbai as he had to appear for another exam on Monday. Varun’s father, Subhash Chandran is a scientist posted at the Kumta research station of Indian Institute of Science.
