86-year-old woman demanding drinking water dies during protest

Kumta: A 86-year-old woman reportedly died during a protest demanding drinking water at Hittalamakki Cross on Saturday.

Remu Makalu Gouda of Moolekeri village near Gokarna in Kumta taluk is the deceased.

According to reports the woman had joined the protesters who were on strike with empty pitchers. During the protest the woman could not tolerate the scorching sun and fainted. Immediately she was rushed to Primary Health Centre at Gokarn in a police van. Later she was shifted to the Government Hospital at Kumta but was declared brought dead.

The residents of Gokarna and surrounding areas have been demanding drinking water facilities for the last 20 years but none of the governments have fulfilled their demand.

Reportedly the District in-charge Minister R.V. Deshpande, condoled the death of Remu Makalu Gouda. He also promised that the work on the drinking water project would be expedited and completed shortly.
