Karwar: As many as 18 fishermen from Uttara Kannada, who were kept under detention in Iran for straying into their territory will be released soon, after the ministry for external affairs took up the matter.
Uttara Kannada DC SS Nakul said that the fishermen were nabbed by the Iranian authorities about seven months ago.
The fishermen had been to Dubai about one year ago seeking job and they were all employed in a Dubai based fishing company. They had ventured fishing from UAE and drifted into the Iranian territory in July and had been in their custody since them. While the families of the fishermen had no clue about their whereabouts, after a while, one of the fishermen had sent videos to his family members seeking help for release.
The families then met the DC urging him to do the needful. Following this, DC SS Nakul had contacted Ministry for external affairs.
With Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj taking up the issue with her Iranian counterpart, the fishermen will be set free soon.
