Udupi: In a tragic incident, a young couple was found dead in a suspected case of suicide at a rented house in Labour Colony, Kalikambanagar, Ambalapady, on the evening of October 16. The incident has left the local community in shock and sorrow.
The deceased have been identified as Pavithra (17), a college student belonging to a migrant worker family, and Mallesh (23), a migrant worker. According to preliminary reports, the two were in a relationship and are believed to have taken the extreme step when no one else was present in the house.
Couple found hanging at residence
Police sources stated that the couple allegedly died by hanging from the railing of the house where Pavithra resided with her family. The tragic discovery was made when neighbours noticed something unusual and alerted the authorities.
The Udupi City Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving the information. The team, led by Sub-Inspector Bharatesh, along with ASI Parameshwar K, ASI Ramesh, and head constable Jayakar, carried out the legal formalities and began an investigation into the matter.
Cause yet to be established
The exact reason behind the couple’s decision remains unclear. Police are investigating all possible angles, including personal and family-related issues. Statements from the victims’ acquaintances and family members are being recorded to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
Authorities have confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have urged the public to avoid speculation until the facts are fully verified.
Bodies sent for post-mortem
Social worker Nityananda Volakad assisted the police in shifting the bodies to the Ajjarkadu District Hospital for post-mortem examination. The bodies were transported in an ambulance after completing the necessary inquest procedures.

Residents of the area have expressed grief over the incident, describing it as deeply unfortunate. Local leaders and social workers have appealed to the youth not to take such drastic measures under emotional distress and to seek help when faced with difficulties.
Mental health professionals have also emphasised the importance of counselling and awareness to prevent such incidents. They urged families and communities to stay attentive to signs of emotional distress among young individuals.
