Udupi: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Karnataka, the Indrali railway station in Udupi has introduced a digital locker facility for passengers, offering a convenient and secure option to store luggage for short durations. The Konkan Railway announced the new feature in an official release, calling it a step toward enhancing passenger comfort and integrating advanced technology into railway services.

According to officials, 15 modern digital lockers have been installed at the station. Passengers arriving in Udupi can now deposit their belongings safely, continue with their work or sightseeing plans, and later retrieve their luggage by paying a nominal fee. The facility is especially beneficial for travellers who need temporary storage during short layovers or day trips.

Enhancing passenger convenience

The new locker system is designed to make travel more flexible and stress-free for passengers who do not wish to carry heavy bags while exploring the city. Using a secure, user-friendly digital interface, passengers can choose locker sizes and rental durations based on their needs.

A Konkan Railway spokesperson said, “The introduction of digital lockers at Indrali station is part of our continuous effort to improve passenger convenience through technological innovation. Depending on the response, this facility may be extended to other major railway stations across Karnataka.”

Locker categories and rental charges

The digital lockers come in four sizes — small, medium, large, and extra-large — and can be rented for different time durations. The charges, inclusive of 18% GST, are as follows:

Small Luggage:

  • 3 hours – ₹15
  • 6 hours – ₹30
  • 12 hours – ₹45
  • 24 hours – ₹60

Medium Luggage:

  • 3 hours – ₹20
  • 6 hours – ₹40
  • 12 hours – ₹60
  • 24 hours – ₹80

Large Luggage:

  • 3 hours – ₹40
  • 6 hours – ₹60
  • 12 hours – ₹90
  • 24 hours – ₹120

Extra-Large Luggage:

  • 3 hours – ₹60
  • 6 hours – ₹120
  • 12 hours – ₹180
  • 24 hours – ₹240

The lockers can be accessed through a digital locking mechanism, ensuring the security and privacy of passengers’ belongings.

Useful for tourists and business travellers

The new facility is expected to be particularly beneficial for tourists and business travellers who often need a secure place to store their luggage temporarily. Udupi, being a popular tourist destination known for its temples, beaches, and proximity to educational institutions like Manipal, attracts thousands of visitors each year.

With the introduction of digital lockers, visitors can now move around the city more freely without the burden of carrying their bags. The service also benefits passengers on connecting trains who have long waiting hours between journeys.

Expansion plans across Konkan Railway network

Konkan Railway authorities indicated that the Indrali station initiative serves as a pilot project. If successful, the digital locker system will be replicated at other key railway stations under its network in Karnataka and along the Konkan coast.

“The feedback from passengers using this facility will help us refine and expand the service to other locations. Our goal is to make railway travel more comfortable and tech-enabled,” an official said.

This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader vision of upgrading passenger amenities and incorporating digital solutions to improve the overall travel experience.

A modern touch to Udupi station

The installation of digital lockers adds to the growing list of passenger-friendly measures being implemented at Udupi’s Indrali station, which has seen infrastructure and service upgrades in recent years. Local residents and frequent travellers have welcomed the initiative, calling it a practical and much-needed addition for both tourists and commuters.

By combining convenience, affordability, and safety, the digital locker facility marks another step forward in modernising railway stations across Karnataka and enhancing passenger experience.
