In a major boost to the state’s aviation sector, Karnataka is preparing to establish a Flight Training Academy at Shivamogga Airport, aimed at nurturing future pilots and aviation professionals. The Karnataka State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) has invited proposals to design, develop, and operate the facility under a 20-year contract, fully funded by the chosen private entity.

The training centre will be developed across 3,500 square metres, with designated areas for hangars, classrooms, simulators, libraries, and administrative offices. The selected operator will also be responsible for installing telecom lines, surveillance systems, and safety mechanisms, as well as managing engineering and student support spaces.

Initially, the institute will train 50 cadets, gradually increasing to 100 annually. Within three months of launch, a minimum of three training aircraft must be operational. Notably, 25% of seats will be reserved for Karnataka residents and women, who will benefit from discounted training fees.

The agency must obtain all regulatory approvals and submit a Detailed Project Report before construction begins. KSIIDC will offer non-financial support, including ATC services, basic firefighting systems, ambulance access, and airstrip upkeep.

KSIIDC will oversee compliance, ensuring adherence to DGCA, MoCA, and BCAS norms. A tiered concession fee system has been proposed based on flying hours, and all operations must meet stringent safety and insurance requirements. Upon contract completion, all assets will revert to the government without compensation.

This project aims to position Karnataka as a leading aviation training hub.
