Chikmagalur: Karnataka Legislative Council Deputy Chairman and JDS leader SL Dharmegowda was found dead near the railway track at Gunasagara at Kadur in Chikamagaluru, during the wee hours of Tuesday.

Police sources say that he may have ended his life, however, no official confirmation on the same has been received yet.

It is said that the Deputy Chairman had asked his gunman and other staff to take leave at 7 pm on Monday. He had later gone out in his personal vehicle and did not return home till about 10 pm. The news about his death came out around midnight.

Several senior politicians, including former prime minister HD Devegowda, have condoled the death of Gowda.

“It is shocking to hear the news that Dharmegowda died by suicide. He was a calm and decent man. This is a loss for our state. May God grant strength to the bereaved family.” HDD tweeted.

Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa expressed his grief over the untimely demise of Dharmegowda.

In a statement, he said that it was “very unfortunate and shocking”.

65-year-old Dharmegowda is survived by his wife and two children. He had been a member of the council since 2018.

It may be recalled that Dharmegowda was manhandled by the Congress legislators in the Council when he tried to chair the session in absence of the Council Chairman.

The Congress MLCs said that Gowda was trying to forcibly occupy the chair to make way for the No-Confidence Motion of the BJP against the Council Chairman.

Meanwhile, the dead body of Dharmegowda has been brought to Shivamogga for Post Mortem.
