Chikkamagaluru: The residents of N R Pura protested in a unique manner against the Bhadra Upper Canal work undertaken by the government via “Appiko Movement.”
The government has started Bhadra Upper Canal work in Satkoli forest region in N R Pura in the district. The project aims to provide water to Bhadra canal by diverting water from Tunga river much to the opposition of the locals.

Due to the project, several houses and lands belonging to farmers have been destroyed. The locals allege that over 22,000 trees will also be felled in the forest region. Opposing the project, the locals on Tuesday held Appiko Movement by hugging the trees.

The locals further added that they had suggested an alternative canal route to the water department. The locals opine that if the department considers alternative route then no village will be affected by the project and trees will also be safe. It is yet to be seen whether government will address the issues raised by the locals here.
